Week 24:  Is water baptism & the Baptism in the Holy Ghost the same thing?

Answer: No.  As Acts 19:1-6 shows us, certain ones who believed John the Baptist's message about "One who was to come" were baptized by John, with water - unto repentance.

John the Baptist was later beheaded.

Saul became Paul on the Damascus Road and later on, Paul then revealed to these Acts 19 Believers the Name of the Lord in whom John the Baptist believed.  

Paul's first question to these Believers was if they had been Baptized in the Holy Ghost.  He wanted to know if they had the power of God released inside them unto good works.

They said, "No."

Paul then said, "Unto what then, were you baptized - to be Believers?"

They said, "Unto John's water baptism of repentance."

Upon hearing these words, Paul told the Believers there was a deeper baptism they could be a part of - one that involved the power of the Spirit of God being released in their innermost beings.

These Believers wanted all that God had for them, so Paul laid his hands on them to be Baptized in the Holy Ghost and they began speaking in tongues whose words were unknown to their earthly minds.

 1And it came to pass, that, while Apollos was at Corinth, Paul having passed through the upper coasts came to Ephesus: and finding certain disciples,

 2He said unto them, Have ye received the Holy Ghost since ye believed? And they said unto him, We have not so much as heard whether there be any Holy Ghost.

 3And he said unto them, Unto what then were ye baptized? And they said, Unto John's baptism.

 4Then said Paul, John verily baptized with the baptism of repentance, saying unto the people, that they should believe on him which should come after him, that is, on Christ Jesus.

 5When they heard this, they were baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus.

 6And when Paul had laid his hands upon them, the Holy Ghost came on them; and they spake with tongues, and prophesied.

 7And all the men were about twelve.
